General Function: The Aquatics Director (AD) reports directly to the Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director, and Program Director. The AD is responsible for ensuring the health and safety of all campers and staff at the pools in the aquatics complex. The AD is also responsible for the supervision and scheduling of all aquatics staff. The AD is knowledgeable in risk management strategies as well as experienced in water chemistry and compliant with all Board of Health safety standards.

1. Identified as a SPARK Day Camp employee with a shirt, swimsuit, and acts as a positive role model to all campers and staff.
2. Apply and enforce all pool rules and proactively address unsafe situations to maintain a safe environment.
3. Adhere to all camp program themes and align water activities to exponentially grow an outstanding aquatics program.
Responsibilities:
1. Availability:
o In - Season: Monday through Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm.
o Pre-Season: Open Houses, Management Meetings, and Staff Training(s). Dates TBD.
2. Assist with the recruitment, hiring, and training of aquatics team members.
3. Training, scheduling, and direction of aquatics staff:
o Reviews and evaluates aquatics staff performance.
o Ensures that all aquatics staff complete the required safety training.
4. Ensure lifeguards are in proper uniform, scanning the pool properly, rotating correctly and enforcing the rules fairly, firmly, and in a positive manner.
5. Updates the lifeguard/aquatics manual with new protocols and procedures.
6. Develops strategies to motivate staff and exceed goals.
7. Outline aquatics staff training and expectations – continue training throughout the season with weekly meetings, updates, and in-service training.
o Schedules lifeguard in service training.
o Conducts rescue drill practice scenarios.
o Conducts “safety checks”
8. Ensure Program is followed:
o The aquatics director must assign themselves to weekly teaching shifts.
o All instructors are trained in both instructing and evaluating each swimmer.
o Classes are ready to begin and end on time.
o Appropriate skills being taught with the appropriate progression techniques.
9. Ensure Bi-weekly Progress Reports/ Swim Grams are sent out throughout the summer.
10. Organize pool space so all activities have enough room to function effectively.
11. Responds to camper and staff requests, inquiries, concerns, and problems in a timely and appropriate manner.
12. Deep Water Swim Assessment: Campers and staff are provided with a swim test to swim in deep water, then achieving a bracelet indicating comfort area and ability. All swim assessments are recorded and tracked.
Preparation and Emergency Response:
1. Responds to emergencies according to the emergency action plan, activating Emergency Action Plan, notifying the Medical Director and administrative staff.
2. Holds service trainings for Aquatics Staff; including emergency response practice scenarios.
3. High Concentration level, observe the behaviors of all campers/staff, and is focused on preventing dangerous activity before it begins.
4. Incident Report is completed and submitted in a timely fashion, filed with the camp and if necessary, sent to legal.
Other Duties:
1. Attendance for pre-season camp training. Dates will be provided in advance.
2. Participation in camp drills is mandatory and may be required without notice.
Skills/ Knowledge:
The Aquatics Director must be at least 21 years old and hold current certifications, as required by the NJ State bathing code.
1. Certified Pool Operator (CPO)
2. CPR/AED Lifeguarding and First Aid certification.
3. WSI Certification, WSI(IT) Preferred
4. American Red Cross Instructor Certification a plus
Experience/ Education:
1. At least 3 years’ aquatics management experience required.
2. Considerable knowledge in planning, implementing, and organizing aquatics programs, specifically for camps.
